Journalists Charged to Contribute for the Success of 2023 Census

Journalists in Yobe State have been charged to discharge their duties professionally and contribute for the success of 2023 population and housing census.

The Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission (NPC) in the state, Alhaji Mai Aliyu Muhammad made the statement at a one day capacity building workshop for journalists, on effective reporting, held at the NUJ secretariat in Damaturu. He said the NPC is planning to conduct census this year, because the exercise is relevant for the development of Nigeria.

He disclosed that, by the United Nations" policy, census should be conducted after every ten years but, Nigeria is far from the policy. He stated that, for this year's process everything would be counted including houses, building and all people living in Nigeria. The Commissioner reveals that, this will be the first time census will be conducted digitally.

Alhaji Mai Aliyu stated that, this year's census will be different and effective . He called on the people to be committed and sincere in the counting process. He said the Commission  is promoted to request journalists to give the process wider publicity for the success of 2023 population and housing census. He thanked the state government for its support and understanding.

Also speaking at the occasion, the chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Rajab Mohammed commended the foresight of the NPC, for organizing the workshop for journalists across the state. He said the gesture is timely considering that the NPC is about to conduct a nation wide census in the country. He expressed optimism that journalists in Yobe State would give the Commission the necessary support and publicity in order to achieve the success of the programme in State.

Highlights of the event is the presentation of four different papers on Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD),Process and Methodology for 2023 Population and Housing Census, History of Population Census in Nigeria and mandate of the Commission, and How to Generate Media Contents on the 2023 census.
